Guitariste français issu du rock, spécialiste de l’improvisation libre et de l’expérimentation sonore, Jean-Marc Montera utilise tout le registre des cordes amplifiées et acoustiques – résonances, percussions, distorsions, extensions et détournements en tout genre. Parmi les musiciens les plus actifs dans le champ des musiques improvisées, il multiplie depuis les années 1970 les rencontres et les contacts avec d’autres univers artistiques jusqu’à rendre de plus en plus floue la « barrière » entre les genres.

Il réalise en outre de nombreuses de collaboration avec le théâtre, Hubert Colas, Jean-Claude Berutti, Peter Palitzsch…, la danse, Odile Duboc, collectif Skalen, et les arts plastiques, Piotr Klemensiewicz, Sandy Amério, Lionel Scoccimaro, Richard Baquié…, l’image, Laure Verluise, Salvo Cuccia, José Cesarini….

Il se produit en solo et dans différentes formations, AMP (Trio de guitares, Akchoté / Montera / Pauvros), The Room(Duo avec Sophie Gonthier), Meditrio (avec les musiciens médiévistes Julien Ferrando – clavicythérium / Jean-Michel Robert – théorbe et électronique), The Invisible Ensemble (avec Famoudou Don Moyé de l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, Paul Elwood, Emmanuel Cremer, Simon Sieger, Thomas Weirich).
Il a fondé l’Ensemble d’Improvisateurs Européens autour d’Hans Koch, Thomas Lehn, Hélène Breschand, Dan Vandewalle, Lelio Giannetto, Chris Cutler et Taavi Kerikmaé. Cet ensemble est spécialisé dans l’interprétation des partitions graphiques de compositeurs du XXème siècle (Cardew, John Cage, Earl Brown…) et la commande auprès de compositeurs actuels (Pierre-Yves Macé et Annette Schlünz).
Il a également collaboré avec Fred Frith, André Jaume, Barre Phillips, Pascal Contet, Gérard Siracusa, Floros Floridis, Paul Lovens, Thruston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Louis Sclavis, Michel Doneda, Carlos Zingaro, Ahmad Compaore, Pauline Oliveros, Christian Wolff … Il est invité pour deux concerts exceptionnels avec Sonic Youth (La Villette-Paris 2007) et Patti Smith ( Fondation Cartier – Paris 2009)

Avec une trentaine d’albums au sein de différentes formations, son premier album solo, Hang Around Shouts, sort en 1995 sur le label FMP (Free Music Production). En 2011, il sort Les Anges du Péché aux côtés de Lee Ranaldo et Thruston Moore, les guitaristes de Sonic Youth, puis en 2012 le coffret 13 Impros avec Fanny Paccoud autour de treize artistes marseillais. En octobre 2013 est sorti What’s Up ? autour des femmes poètes de la Beat Generation, sur le label Signatures (Radio France).

Jean-Marc Montera est le cofondateur du GRIM (Groupe de Recherche et d’Improvisation Musicales) en 1978. Il s’associe en 1999 avec l’auteur metteur en scène Hubert Colas, pour fonder Montévidéo, centre de créations contemporaines à Marseille. La vocation de ce centre est de créer des passerelles, d’établir une interactivité entre la musique et le théâtre sous leurs formes les plus actuelles et de multiplier les confrontations entre artistes et disciplines.

En 2017 il crée le D.R.I.M département de recherche pour les musiques improvisées au sein du GMEM dont il devient l’artiste associé.

Jean-Marc Montera’s Biography
A French guitarist with origins in rock, specialising in free improvisation and sound experimentation, he performs solo and in different groups, AMP (Trio of guitarists, Akchoté / Montera / Pauvros), The Room (Duo with Sophie Gonthier), Meditrio (with medievalist musicians Julien Ferrando – clavicytherium / Jean-Michel Robert – theorbo and electronic). Exploiting the full range of amplified and acoustic strings : resonances, percussion, distortions, extensions and misappropriations of all styles, he evokes a world of abstract sound and the daily mechanisms of life and the city. Amongst the most active musicians in the field of improvisation, since the 1970’s he has increased encounters and contact with other artistic worlds so much so that he is breaking the barriers between the different genres.

He participates in many collaborations, for example with image, Salvo Cuccia, José Cesarini…., the theatre, Hubert Colas, Jean-Claude Berutti, Peter Palitzsch…, dance, Odile Duboc, collective Skalen, and Fine arts, Sandy Amério, Lionel Scoccimaro, Richard Baquié…

He was invited in two special concerts with Sonic Youth (La Villette-Paris 2007) and Patti Smith ( Fondation Cartier – Paris 2009).

In 2001 he created l’Ensemble d’Improvisateurs Européens bringing together Hans Koch, Thomas Lehn, Hélène Breschand, Dan Vandewalle, Lelio Giannetto, Chris Cutler and Taavi Kerikmaé. This ensemble specialised in the interpretation of existing graphic scores (Cornelius Cardew, John Cage, Earl Brown…), and of those commissioned by young composers (Pierre-Yves Macé and Annette Schlünz) .

Jean-Marc Montera co-founded GRIM (Group of Musical Research and Improvisation) in 1978. He joined forces with stage director Hubert Colas in 1999 to found Montévidéo, centre of contemporary art creations in Marseille.The centre’s priority is to create links, to establish interactivity between music and theatre in their most modern forms and to increase confrontations between artists and disciplines.

In 2017 he created D.R.I.M / Department Research for Improvised Musique within GMEM in which he became Associated Artist.
